How to Build Your Kids’ Fine Motor Skills

The term “fine motor skills” refers to the proper and effective use of hands and fingers. Gross motor skills, on the other hand, are responsible for tasks like turning, walking, jumping, and so on.
Your child needs properly-developed fine motor skills to handle tasks like brushing teeth, washing hands, zipping a zipper, holding a pen, writing, etc. Strong fine motor skills not only make children more independent in performing day-to-day tasks, but also improve their creative expression, learning, and exploring abilities, which in turn builds a foundation for kids’ future academic success.

In order to develop his or her fine motor skills, a child needs to exercise small hand and finger muscles, and there are many opportunities to do this by performing simple tasks at home or by playing with specific toys. The National Association for the Education of Young Children provides a helpful list of some activities that can aid in successful development of fine motor skills in kids. These activities include:

  • Setting the table
  • Holding knives, forks, and spoons
  • Pouring juice into a cup
  • Wiping the table with a sponge
  • Helping with meals—stir, shake, chop, cut, and mix
  • Opening and closing containers with lids
  • Cutting with child-safe scissors
  • Finger painting
  • Using a paintbrush
  • Playing with squishy materials and clay—roll, smoosh, pat, pound, and use tools like popsicle sticks or stamps
  • Drawing, scribbling, or writing with crayons, pencils, and markers
  • Putting together puzzles
  • Placing pegs in a board
  • Building with small blocks
  • Playing board games
  • Playing with puppets

We fully understand how important it is for kids to build proper fine motor skills from a young age; many of our toys allow for hand and finger exercise. Here are the Eggs Time products that we recommend:

All Eggs Time video games/apps – clicking buttons and pointing and moving a computer mouse helps kids exercise hand and finger muscles.

Emoji Egg Slime and Squishy toys – these two surprise toy collections developed for Emoji Eggs feature soft squishy rubber toys and slime toys that mold into different shapes. These are great for squishing, pushing, and rolling in the hands. These toys provide beneficial hand and finger exercise.

King Egg Cubic Erasers, Lucky Egg Animal Erasers, Happy Egg Animal Erasers – these collections of surprise toys feature erasers of various forms and shapes that separate into pieces and can be re-arranged to their original shapes, similar to puzzles or construction toys. Each eraser measures from 1 to 2.5 inches in size. By constructing and deconstructing small toys like these, kids practice finger and hand dexterity, build small muscles, and improve hand-eye coordination.

There is no doubt that proper fine motor abilities are a crucial skill to develop. In fact, according to Parents.com, research indicates that developing strong fine motor skills in young kids proves to be far more influential in their future academic success than purely intellectual activities like counting and memorizing letters.
